Creative Posing Ideas

Ever have a moment during a photography session where you are stumped on what your next pose should be?

As a photographer dealing with female models, most of my models are simply intuitive and can strike pose after pose without direction...which is pretty amazing if I must say so myself. Other times, ideas seem to slip away and a moment of thinking of how to pose next may occur...don't worry! Lol. It has happened to everyone at some point and the goal is to just keep things moving.

The best advice I was ever given when dealing with posing models is to tell them to imagine their body parts and props kind of like a phone number...for example 123-456-7890.

Pretend each digit is a body part or prop. The goal is to slightly change the phone number one digit at a time. So if your hand is the 1 in the above example...let your hand move from your hip, to chin, to shoulder, to neck, to hair, etc. and so on. If the 2 in the above example is perhaps your eyes...glance at me, off to the side, close your eyes and tilt your head upwards, etc. The 3 could even be for me...my angles. Different points of view can sometimes dramatically influence an images visual effects. A combination of these changes create so many possibilities!

I don't know about you, but in my mind, this was a game changer when directing models in a way that I love to see for the looks we are going for. Hope this was as helpful to you as it was to me when I first started shooting. We are in this creative journey together!
